What are Archetypes?

28 May 2022 by Embracing Shamanism

Archi means ‘the first’. They are the primary or first things from which all phenomena come – they are potentials that reside in the ocean of being, the imaginal world. – Archetype, the more familiar term, combines ‘archi’ with ‘type’ – meaning ‘impression’, from the Greek to beat or strike, to mold. – Archetype is the first expression of the archi in identifiable form – though not physically. It means to prefigure or foreshadow.

The Archetypes, which reside in the imaginal world, prefigure the forms they become in our world. Every form we see in this world is a modified expression of the Archetype that underlies it. In other words, it means in the ether exist these formative forces that give rise and form to the manifest world. There are these energetic imprints that arise to all these things that we know in our lives – i.e. the word Beauty is an Archetype – Love, God, The Divine – these are massive collective Archetypes.

Important here is that there are different definitions – it can be a pattern of behaviour i.e. The Bully is a pattern of behaviour. It is an expression of that person that comes through the pattern that we call The Bully. Archetypes are patterns of behaviour, sometimes it is an energetic weather pattern – it has nothing to do with you. When your soul fuses to this dimension, these are patterns of reality that were created before you arrived. You fused your consciousness into them and you have no say in them. These are called fate.

To keep it simple, an Archetype is a pattern and you give it a name. So if someone is mothering and they display nurturing qualities and they mother others, they have the Mother Archetype. If someone demeans, bullies, insults, scapegoat someone else, they have the Bully Archetype.

If this is something you would like to explore deeper please look at the training we offer here.
